Fashion editors wrote last year that glamour is coming back, and dressing up for the average person is today.

Dressing down is now so old school and yesterday.

Heading back to the salons for your hair and learning to put makeup on again is so empowering for women of today!

The sloppy looks and dowdy without a girdle on, is not acceptable anymore!

It is all about curves and glamour today,, (At last, thank you Lord, thank you, Lord)!!!!!

How I love the era of the 20's through the 50's. Especially the 40's. That was a special time for fashion when both men and women always dressed up to go out.

(The late 70's people dressed up to go out dancing, though the clothes were a bit tacky, (I know, I wore them), they still dressed up!)

I really enjoyed the Oscars this 2012. In my opinion, not the best gowns I have ever seen, but the most classic and tasteful for the most part. (And where was Halle Berry????)

Once again JLO knew how to market herself and took advantage of her hour glass figure. She may not have been a nominee this year, but she sure won the crowd! A tad bit revealing on top, but she did it for promotional reasons I am sure. Other than that, the gown was drop dead beautiful!

Elegance of yesteryear is coming back today. Less low cut neck lines and more being covered up! Show off the curves of the body, the makeup and hair. Speaking of hair, Cameron Diaz needed her roots done for the event. The dark regrowth brassy roots is so yesterday! Check out Gwyneth's perfectly colored blonde hair!

People are back in the salons today. If you have dark or brassy roots, time for a new hair colorist!

Now I am not a person who likes to talk trash mouth, however, Angelina, if you are going to show some leg, anorexia bony knees were so yesterday! You are so beautiful, but eat some food girl! The Marilyn hour glass is back in Vogue. Especially for gowns! Talk to JLO for some advice....

Loving The New Martha "DO" !

One of the years I was teaching at the Baby Lock Tech yearly sewing machine retailer event, to my surprise, Martha Pullen was in my class on fiber art.

Martha is a well known PBS host of "Martha's Sewing Room", and features heirloom as well as many other different genres of the sewing arts.

Later I was invited by Martha to lecture at her sewing expo in Texas. I found out Martha loves to dance, and is a musical theater fan! Martha told me she herself used to perform. Martha is so at home on stage in front of an audience.

Since 1993 I have watched her on TV, she has evolved and is not afraid of change. She once told me she used to get the perms and the "helmet head" hairdo's. Martha has evolved and truly keeps herself up to date with hair trends and fashion style!

It was a great honor to meet her in person and to have her in my class room, and then be invited to teach at her event. She had asked me to be on her PBS TV show, but at the time our schedules would not connect, I was in the middle of wrapping up my "CELEBRITY BAGS" book.

One day, I got a phone call from Martha while she was teaching at one of her dealer events in Oklahoma. She told me she loves how I play music and has everyone dancing.

She told me to listen as she then held the phone up. The music was playing and the students were all dancing and you could hear them all having a heck of a good time!

She thanked me for the inspiration, and now has everyone dancing as well at her events. I was so touched by the call!

I want to give a kudos to Martha and her hair stylist! As many of you know, I write books on sewing, travel and teach, and I am a hair stylist in the salon in Tampa. I love making beautiful fiber art with my sewing machine, and I love making people beautiful with hair and makeup. Thank you Martha for helping to encourage everyone, and especially the home sewers not to forget to also make themselves feel and look pretty too!

I almost forgot,, when you go to one of her events, get ready to pee your pants when she goes through her act of her search for the perfect under garment, and discovers crotch less under garments!

The Evolution Of Life

My grandmother would always tell me that getting old wasn't the hardest part of life. The hardest part of life is when your family, friends, and people you admired, loved, and looked up to pass on. It leaves an empty place in your heart and makes you sit and realize no money or self possessions in the world can save one from death.

Life, an evolution. There are three things in my life that really hit me in the heart this far in my life.

The first was when I found out my idol Karen Carpenter had died. I remember that day so clearly.

I was having breakfast with a friend.

He was reading the newspaper at the table in the restaurant we were in. He handed me the paper, and as insensitive as I never believed he could be, said to me "Oh look, another torch song singer is finally dead". I was devastated.

In all our lives, there are singers that we listen to. Singers that touch us so deeply. Songs we remember through birth, marriage, and death. My heart must have almost elevated to my throat. I can remember the tears falling down my face. A woman whose music I would listen to and wonder what angel was inside her that allowed such sound to come from the human mouth.

I was visiting at a friend's home. I remember hearing this angel singing through the speakers. When I looked over, there was the cover of Whitney Houston's first album. I sat in front of that stereo inhaling every sound of her voice. I became an instant fan, and was captivated not only by her innocent voice, but her beauty. The next day, I ran out to the record store and from that day forward, she was part of my tape player in my car and on my stereo in my rented room, then in my home.

Many, many years later, the next thing that took my heart was my divorce. The memories of all the music we had listened to. I had never been in love like that before. But being in love was the greatest gift ever given to me.

Prior when we had moved to Florida, I remember my ex had called me from work and said to turn the super bowl game on. I was engaged at my sewing machine at the time listening to Whitney. There on the TV she was singing the national anthem in Tampa. I fell to my knees when she finished.

Now, she is gone. I sat here these past couple of days and kept asking to myself, why? Why do these people with such incredible talent destroy their bodies and take their lives?

I realized, as grandma once told me, getting older is not so hard. It is watching people around you leave forever.

The evolution of life.

Sometimes it takes other people's lives, for us to realize how special life really is. Rich or poor, weak or strong, life is so very precious.

Whom we choose to love is something that should not be taken away from us as human beings. Everyone needs to love, be loved, and see love in others.

I have said many times before, nothing makes me happier as a teacher, in watching people succeed in life. Good, honest, kind, hard working people succeed.

Though I had never met or known Whitney in person, I felt like a part of my life died. The same way it felt when Karen died. But we will always have the music that lives on so we can remember those years of all the births, marriages, and yes, the passing of those we loved.

Both of these singers died in the month of February, the month of my birthday.

The evolution of life. God will always bring us more people to love, and we shall always remember those who left us, forever in our hearts through the music.

The greatest love of all.....

Don't Be Fooled By "Designed In The USA" Labels

Oh yes, that designed in the USA label.

To the average consumer, they would think it is made in the USA.

Companies are becoming tricky in the way they are deceiving consumers.

Look inside that designed in USA item for the country of origin tag or label. Chances are it will say made in China, Vietnam, Bangladesh and other offshore countries.

Why is this a concern? Because the production of that item can be made in the USA.

Why isn't it?

Let us take for example a fashion accessory like a handbag. It sells for $500 and it is made in China. Comsumers are rushing to buy one. They are even posting Youtube videos showing their collections of these $500 made in China handbags.

It used to be made in the USA. But the corporation CEO's got greedy when they bought these original USA created companies and laid workers off in America and sent production to China and other countries.

The consumer does not realize, but that $500 handbag costs the company pennies on the dollar to make. They could well indeed bring a factory back to America to make those bags and other items by other companies. These corporations can indeed help rebuild America. So why aren't they? And why are consumers supporting other countries while so many Americans are unemployed because of this?

Now let us take those $200 jeans that are made in China and other countries.

Do you know that there are jean factories in the USA making high end jeans as well? So why give the money to a company that does not employ factory workers in the USA and uses slave labor in other countries?

The consumer has the power to change the economics of this country.

Read your labels and be wise. Your job and your children's jobs depend on it.

What Is Fear To You?

One of the greatest things about being a sewing author and teacher, is seeing people succeed. Watching their accomplishments, becoming independent, and self sufficient.

I get such a thrill and a smile when I see hard working people who reach for their goals and never give up. Because it also shows me there is nothing I cannot do myself in life. And from learning that, I can pass it on to others.

I have been on this planet for over half a century. Doesn't that sound cool? Well for a guy like me, I think it is cool. But for the ladies, not so cool. Maybe for some men not so cool either.

But during my time on this good earth, I have met the most incredible people out there.

A few times in my life, a stranger came out of no where and offered me direction and help in my life. Has that ever happened to you? What a gift to pass on, and then to pay it forward.

What is happiness to you? Happiness to me is being able to create and write what I taught myself into publications to be able to share with other people who share the same interest and are hungry to learn more. Education allows the ability to be independent.

I am hungry to always learn more myself. If you are like me, you understand contentment in being able to sit and create in the quiet and peacefulness of where you live. There is much to be said for those of us who are self sufficient.

Success is measured on what you do on your own, and then how you are able to pass that on and help others.

The good book tells us to always do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

When I see people succeed in life on their own merit, I understand their excitement. I respect their determination and independence. You know God gave us all the tools to create and build.

Many people do create while others try to destroy.

Recently I had witnessed someone trying to destroy another person's happiness. We all know why people do this, it is because they are unhappy in their own life, therefore they wish not to see other people be happy or succeed.

As a teacher, I want all my students to succeed. This is why I am an author and teacher.

I realize not every student is going to stay productive on their own after a class. But one can only hope you gave them an inspiration to go home and have a bit more independence and self esteem in all they do.

I pray for world peace. I pray for happiness and success for all the honest people in this world. I pray for those who are greedy that they are forgiven and see a better way.

Honesty is what you take as your portfolio when you get to those golden gates in the sky. All the riches you consume in a mortal existence cannot be taken with you in the end.

But what you do and earn on your own, and what you offer to help others, will be the reward in your heart. And that my friends, is worth more than any amount of money in the world!

When you pick up that shovel and plant your own garden, you can share your fruits with those in need. Because of your hard work, you have not stolen from others, but instead helped feed others.

As I watch the way of the world today and all the talk of politics and greed. It saddens me that we as a nation and people, so many are running in fear. When there is fear, there is greed and dishonesty.

I watch many of my friends my age, and find the older they are getting the more insecure with their lives they become. I recently had the opportunity to talk to a Reverend and asked him, why is that?

He told me that when people have so much, they fear losing it. But people who have so little, they have nothing to fear because they have nothing to lose. Love and faith in their heart can never be taken away.

He told me when people are young, they have not accumulated the riches and temptations, that is why the youth are so fearless.

As I have been researching for made in the USA products, the videos I have found of the people who are creating their own businesses by making their own items and then being able to hire people and give them a job, is so wonderful to see!

The youth will change our country and our economics. I see more and more people creating and inventing with their hands today. The youth are doing what our great, great grandparents did in this country many years ago. They are creating and building again. They are empowering the tools that God gave them - their hands and will power.

Someone once told me fear stands for false evidence appearing real. I say fear stands for when one loses their inner compassion for others and they lose themselves in life. They become threatened for some reason. Then they become paranoid and insecure.

These are the kind of people who are not happy to see other people succeed in life. I find this sad. So all we can do is pray for them, show them a smile and try to open their hearts again like when they were young, and happy. Before they acquired too much in life and before greed took over.

Encourage each other to build a new beginning, to create with your hands and offer the support to others who need to learn and be taught how.

Everyone in life had someone help them get to where they are. Be it a simple offer of advice, a lead of direction, a simple pat on the back of encouragement, a smile and a hello from a stranger, money given to them from their parents.

What you do with that help in your life is up to you.

How you treat others in your life will either open the golden gates, or keep them closed on you.

As I was watching the video of Raleigh Denim, they talked about the last breed of the textile factory workers and the knowledge they have that will be lost. Lost because their jobs were sent overseas and who will they teach what they know to?

And then Raleigh Denim was born by two people of youth.

And thanks to the stimulus program, they were able to hire people to employ in their factory.

The last of the dying breed came to assist and help in skill, and knowledge to the youth to help reinvent and bring back the made in the USA. To help pass their skill to the next generation.

That my friends, is what life is all about. How dare our country try and destroy that for the greed of a politician, and a wealthy CEO.

Good will always conquer the evil.

While we are pleased that the President focused so much on how critical manufacturing is to our country, the Administration and Congress must now promote an agenda that actively supports the manufacturing community as it works to thrive and create jobs.

We Need To Take Responsibility

I realize I have many fans around the world. So when I write and speak about the USA, I am also helping to speak for you in your country as well.

I receive many emails from fans all over the globe that tell me their jobs were sent to China and other countries as well.

Each of us have to take a responsibility, take ownership of our choices. Take ownership of learning a skill that if you cannot find it made in the USA, then learn to make it yourself.

I teach sewing. The sewing I teach is all about methods, techniques, mechanics and ergonomics of sewing. I teach a skill that can help people go further to sustain their lives. To be able to go further and make something around the house, for yourself, and your family, to be able to create a quality item you can sell to bring in an extra income.

The sewing machine companies are promoting to start a home based business.

If what you are making now is not helping to sustain your life, bring that extra income in, or being able to create something rather than buy another item made in China, then you are as guilty of off shore outsourcing and the downfall of the American economy.

The problem today is people want instant self gratification. We are living in a throw away society. And from that mentality being drilled into people, the quality of work is not 100% as well.

Years ago in an office, it was about customer service. Today it is all about sales. You don't make your quota in 60 days, you are terminated. The hell with customer service! Proof is in when you call a company and are redirected with all the buttons you have to push by an automated computer. Then you have to wait forever for a real human voice to help you. And praying all along, nothing gets added to your bill you did not ask for.

A few generations ago, people knew how to make things, they were taught a skill. Be it in wood working, gardening, textile work, etc. People used to be proud of their personal accomplishments. So what happened?

For every person that complains about our economy and the loss of jobs, I ask you - are you trained in a skill that when we get our manufacturing jobs back to the USA, that you can fill that skilled position?

If there are under aged children in third world countries making garments, handbags, and toys in a factory, why can't the average adult American do the same?

It takes every person in our country to demand the education for the skills and the jobs.

It takes every person in the USA to make an effort and get off the couch in front of the TV.

It takes every person in our country to read the labels of the items they are buying and find that made in USA item.

If you cannot afford something, then learn to make it!

Companies and small businesses were created because people had dreams, and they worked hard for their dreams. So what happened to many of those companies? The original owners got old and sold the business. The corporation that bought them, sent production off shore and laid Americans off.

One of my co workers that I worked with once told me - "I don't care to look at labels, I am in a hurry, if I like it, I buy it."

She was born and raised in Germany. Her heart is not in America, yet she is now an American working citizen. Why the attitude?

Is this how most Americans feel? No one will ever understand until that pink slip is handed to them at their job. No one will understand until their unemployment check has ended and they still cannot find work to feed themselves and their families.

No one will ever understand until you have a major medical issue and cannot be treated because you have no insurance.

No one will ever understand until your child is turned away for educational financial help because you make a dollar over the poverty limit.

No one will understand until that stay at home mom's husband looses his job and the wife who has never been educated has to go out and work for minimum wage.

Education and skill should never be cut from the budget.

People need to get up and learn all they can and work with their hands again.

We all need to take responsibility for what has happened and what we allowed to happen in the USA and the country you reside in.

Every nation should have opportunities and not be treated like slaves. If all the countries that products are sent to be made pay and treat their workers fairly, you will see jobs come back to your country. The items you buy like garments and handbags made in those third world countries and China, think about how little that worker is being paid, how they are being treated and abused, and how rich you are making the CEO of that USA corporation who used to have their products made in the USA and had people employed in the USA.

But remember, until you are starving or paid slave labor wages, you will never understand.

Learn a skill and use what God gave you to better not only your life, but others around you.

Learn, teach, and apply.

Anything at rest will remain at rest until acted upon by an outside force or motion.

That force or motion is you.

Being a person who loves to be a creator and build with my hands, I really enjoy watching these kind of shows and seeing craftsmanship at work behind the scenes. I myself have a select group of luxury clients that I create for.

When the very rich spend money, they want the best in quality. It takes special craftsmanship to create luxury items.

It is a win, win all around. it keeps craftsmen employed, and the rich spending their money for quality items.

Luxury items are works of art. It truly is a labor of love for the creator / artist, and an investment for the buyer.

Today, my friend and I ran over to the furniture consignment shop down from our salon.

They have the most beautiful furniture you have ever seen that people are trying to sell because they have lost their jobs which means they have lost their homes here in Florida.

And, some people just are tired of their furniture and want to buy new, so they send their items over to the consignment shop. Now mind you, this is no ordinary consignment shop. Everything they sell is top craftsmanship quality at huge discounted prices.

The store also sells draperies, paintings and other home dec items.

The owner was telling me that they will only sell custom made bedding, draperies and home dec items. The bedding and draperies she will only consign if made in the USA.

What she explained to me and showed me is the quality of work. People come to her consignment shop because of the quality craftsmanship. What came next really opened my eyes.

She told me, many people who make draperies and bedding try to have her sell them in her store. She said in all her years, the best quality items that are custom made per bedding, draperies, etc., come from outside of Florida and especially from the Carolina's.

As we talked, I mentioned that in the Carolina's is where the industry used to be. The textile factories, the furniture factories and so much more. The people who worked in those factories have the skill to create high quality custom made items. and since those factories have moved out of the country, there now has been a couple generations who lost those skills to be taught and applied.

But I was really surprised to hear quality custom sewing in Florida she says is not up to par.

The bedding, drapery, and furniture in her store is so beautiful. And at prices people can all afford. Example, a high end dining room hutch which sold brand new for $10,000 and is in perfect condition, is selling used for $1,200.

So what does this tell us per the quality of craftsmanship here where I live in Florida compared to the rest of our country? It is all about education and skill.

When American companies send jobs to China and other off shore countries, it trickles down to the smallest business in the USA.

So you like that bag that is made in China? (Read the country of origin tag inside). Think about how many people lost their manufacturing jobs when those bags were sent to China for production before you pull out that credit / debit card.

What American consumers do not understand, is that for every person that gets laid off from their job that was sent to places like China, it is a domino fall that has a cause and effect of other jobs right down to your job as well. No jobs mean people do not have money to buy. And in your job, if that happens, your pink slip is fast approaching.

Read your labels and tell your friends. If they act like they do not care, when their pink slip is handed to them, they will care then. The only way to rebuild our country is to rebuild jobs and the consumer needs to support the made in USA product.

If they don't want to participate or care, show them a map of China and ask when they will be giving up their USA citizenship, and where in China they will be moving to since they don't care about the USA......

Please my friends, read your labels before you buy! Your job could be next!

Americans, if you want to see change in our economy, it takes each and every person to participate.

Before you buy that high fashion handbag that is no longer made in America, but made in China (check your labels before you buy), please consider a made in the USA product/handbag.

And don't forget our Canadian neighbors. Support our friends in Canada who still employ people in a handbag factory.

If you have friends who buy those fashion bags made in China, please let them know they truly are NOT participating in rebuilding the USA economy. You will hear many say they don't care, they love the bag. Kindly remind them that when the job lay offs trickle down to where they work, and they are unemployed, that is when reality will set in and they will suddenly care.

Canada is our sister and we need to stick close to home by supporting Made in USA, Made In Canada, and fair trade items around the world (check for fair trade labels).

Florida Alligators Threatened By Pythons

The alligator used to be on the brink of extinction. Today they have been removed off of the endangered species list and their population is now being controlled by each state where their natural habitat exists.

Here is an interesting video as they talk about how they control the population.

Currently in Florida, a species that has endangered the habitat of the Florida gator are pythons.

Pythons are not native to the USA. People adopt them as pets and when they cannot handle them no longer, they release them into the everglades and other areas in Florida. And not just Florida, but other southern states as well. This is a serious threat to the human population regarding children, pets and other native creatures.

The snakes are now being hunted and killed. Their meat is used for human consumption and their skins are used for luxury items such as shoes, handbags, etc.

In the case of the python, it is the irresponsibility of humans that is causing this conflict in nature where these reptiles are not native.

As per the gators, just like there are cattle farms to raise milk and meat, as long as humans consume meat, there will always be cattle farms. Gator farms raise the alligators for the same purpose.

Both animals are used for meat and have their skins turned into leather. So nothing of each animal is wasted. Gators however are a breed of animal that can only be raised in the southern states which is their natural habitat. Whereas cattle can be raised in any climate. That is what makes a luxury skin even more valuable along with the skin itself.
